Melanie’s Workshops
These workshops are designed to deepen the understanding of anatomy, biomechanics and the mechanisms of injury in order to develop practical approaches to resolving injury through exercise.
Melanie Byford-Young is co-founder of Pacific NW Pilates and a Master Instructor Trainer of Rehabilitation for STOTT PILATES, involved in updating their internationally based program in 2007. She builds her workshops around integrating her students’ knowledge, empowering them to truly understand what they have learned so they may find the best healing solutions for their clients. For more detailed descriptions on Melanie’s workshops, click here.
Many of these workshops are approved for STOTT PILATES continuing education credits. Instructors will be awarded a maximum of 0.2 STOTT PILATES CECs PER YEAR for workshops and courses that are not specifically from the STOTT PILATES syllabus.
Workshops require submitting payment either by calling us with a credit card or mailing a check.
CELEBRATE PILATES WEEK 2012 with Melanie’s four-part workshop series May 4th-6th! “Dynamic Control of the Pelvis and Lumbar Spine: Core Conditioning and Strength Training.”
Did you ever wonder why certain clients have such a hard time developing proper glutes? Or why some clients walk out of every session taller, but into every session hunched over? Why some clients respond quickly to Pilates, and for others it takes years to change? This four part workshop series is designed to help pilates instructors and clinicians be able to understand the in-depth mechanisms of neuromotor control, dynamic load transfer and developing optimal function of the lumbar spine and pelvis. It will revolutionize how you choose and modify Pilates based exercises in order to help clients overcome chronic lumbo-pelvic and postural issues.

*4-part workshop series
SIJ and the Pelvic Girdle
Date: Fri 5/4/2012
Time: 4:00pm-7:00pm
Cost: 4-part series $500
Instructor: Melanie Byford-Young
This three hour workshop will help pilates instructors and therapists understand the mechanisms behind pelvic disorders, and how to systematically approach rehabilitation with Pilates. We will examine how to reestablish proper force closure and dynamic load transfer through the pelvic girdle. Our focus will be on developing visual assessment skills, cueing and clinical reasoning to be able to help people with SIJ and pelvic issues.
Perfecting Lumbar Spine Stability and Control
Date: Sat 5/5/2012
Time: 11:00am - 2:00pm
Cost: 4-part series $500
Instructor: Melanie Byford-Young
This workshop will take an in-depth look at both segmental and global control of the lumbar spine. We will examine segmental instability, and develop strategies for reawakening the multifidus and other muscles that frequently get inhibited by pain. We will then work on how to develop and progress global strength and dynamic load transfer through the lumbar spine. Students will learn to apply these practical solutions to clients with disc issues, chronic pain and other common conditions.
Understanding the Neuromotor System: Core Conditioning vs. Strength Training made practical
Date: Sat 5/5/2012
Time: 3:00pm-6:00pm
Cost: 4-part series $500
Instructor: Melanie Byford-Young
This workshop is designed to update students on current understandings of the neuromotor system AND give practical solutions for reestablishing proper neuromotor control. We will differentiate ‘core conditioning’ from ‘strength training’, and learn how to use Pilates to develop both.
Case Studies and Application of Lumbo-pelvic rehabilitation strategies
Date: Sun 5/6/2012
Time: 10:00am – 1:00pm
Cost: 4-part series $500
Instructor: Melanie Byford-Young
During this three hour session, we will work on clinical reasoning and practical application of the concepts presented in the former workshops. We will focus on reestablishing proper neuromotor control through exercise selection and progressions, cueing and props. This will be achieved through case studies and hands-on practical time.
Pilates for Clients with Hip & Knee Replacements
Date: Sat. 9/8/2012
Time: 3:00pm-6:00pm
Cost: $165
Instructor: Melanie Byford-Young
This three hour workshop will help instructors work safely and effectively with clients who have, or are preparing for joint replacement. We will focus on identifying and unwinding compensation patterns that develop prior to surgery.
