About/FAQ: Continuing Education Credits (CECs)
STOTT PILATES has established a Continuing Education Credit (CEC) program to help instructors stay up-to-date and to offer fitness professionals an opportunity to learn more about the STOTT PILATES method.
Requiring STOTT PILATES instructors to stay current with the latest methodologies means that Pilates students everywhere can depend upon STOTT PILATES’ teachers to be knowledgeable, safe and effective. This helps maintain the credibility of the entire program and boosts the credibility of every individual instructor as well.
STOTT PILATES® instructors must obtain six hours (0.6 credits) of STOTT PILATES® Continuing Education Credits annually to maintain their certification. The following questions and answers help explain the program in more detail.
Q. Why maintain my certification?
A. Credible certification is becoming increasingly important to employers, insurance companies and consumers. In fact, experts agree that to ensure long-term sustainability and to better serve the public, the fitness industry will eventually need to make certification mandatory. A STOTT PILATES certification is well respected in the fitness industry because of the organization’s high education standards and mission to stay on top of new research and industry advancements.
Q. Why have a Continuing Education Credit (CEC) Program?
A. The STOTT PILATES CEC Program was developed to provide all Certified Instructors and Instructor Trainers with on-going learning opportunities to keep skills current and maintain a high quality of education. This also helps ensure that instructors stay abreast of the latest advancements in exercise science and the STOTT PILATES repertoire.
Q. How many CECs must I earn annually?
A. STOTT PILATES Certified Instructors are required to obtain six hours (0.6 credits) of STOTT PILATES CECs annually to maintain certification.
Q. How soon after I receive my certification will I have to start earning annual CECs?
A. Students studying to become STOTT PILATES instructors have one full calendar year to earn certification credits beginning January 1st of the year following successful completion of their exam(s). For example, if you successfully complete your Intensive Mat Plus (IMP) exam in July 2007, your first CEC period begins January 1, 2008 and ends December 31, 2008. CECs are earned every year on the calendar year (January through December). CECs are not transferable from one year to another.
Q. How do I complete my CECs?
A. You can complete your CECs through any combination of the following:
1. Attend a STOTT PILATES workshop or presentation at a trade show, Licensed Training Center (such as Pacific NW Pilates), Hosting site, or at the STOTT PILATES International Certification Center*.
2. Complete a customized repertoire review with a STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainer. You can make an appointment to work with an Instructor Trainer at Pacific NW Pilates by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org.
3. Complete a teaching evaluation with a STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainer. You can make an appointment to work with an Instructor Trainer at Pacific NW Pilates by sending an email to email@example.com or calling 503-292-4409.
4. Take an eligible anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology or other exercise science course or workshop. If this is offered by an organization other than STOTT PILATES, you must petition STOTT PILATES to earn credits for that course. A maximum of 0.2 CECs can be earned this way. The petition fee is $10 ($13 in Canada). Only one petition may be submitted per year. For more information about this process, please contact STOTT PILATES directly at 1-800-910-0001.
5. Study a STOTT PILATES video or DVD and submit a VHS video (NTSC or PAL) of yourself teaching a selection of the subject matter to a client for evaluation. DVDs are acceptable but must be recorded on a brand-name DVD recorder. All DVDs must be Apple compatible. A 15-minute segment should be submitted per video (for example, watch three videos and submit a 45-minute video of yourself teaching to earn 0.3 CECs).
The evaluation fee is $10 ($13 in Canada) per 15-minute submission.
A petition form must accompany your video submission along with the petition fee. See the link at the top of this page to download the form.
Q. What if I fail to earn my CECs?
A. At STOTT PILATES we believe our CEC program is an important part of being a STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor. If you fail to earn your CECs you will be removed from the Instructor Finder on the STOTT PILATES Web site. You could lose your Certified Instructor status and may be required to re-examine.
Q. Is there an annual renewal fee?
A. There is no annual renewal fee. The cost of maintaining your CEC status depends on which CEC option you choose. Please refer to the answers to the question above (How do I complete my CECs?) for a list of options. Contact Pacific NW PILATES® at 503-292-4409 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information about rates for workshops or hourly Instructor Trainer fees.
Q. What does a customized repertoire review involve?
A. This involves booking a private session with a STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainer to review basic principles, relevant modifications and/or any STOTT PILATES exercise updates. All 0.6 CECs (6 hours with an Instructor Trainer) can be earned with a customized repertoire review. Please book repertoire review sessions at Pacific NW Pilates by sending email to email@example.com or by calling 503-292-4409. Make sure to receive your CEC evaluation form from your Instructor Trainer and send this to STOTT PILATES along with the CEC submission form to prove your attendance.
Q. What is a teaching evaluation?
A. A teaching evaluation involves taking a STOTT PILATES Instructor Trainer through a workout (as a mock client), so that he or she can evaluate your teaching abilities and provide you with feedback. A maximum of 0.4 credits can be awarded for teaching evaluation sessions.
Q. Will STOTT PILATES certification courses count toward CECs?
A. Yes, STOTT PILATES Certification courses will count towards annual CECs. The number of credits awarded depends upon the length of the course. See Level 1 and Level 2 course descriptions for more details.
Q. How many credits are awarded for a STOTT PILATES workshop?
A. The number of credits awarded depends upon the length of the workshop. Generally, .1 credit is awarded per one hour of study, so a three-hour workshop would be worth .3 CECs, but you should always check out the specific information about each workshop to be certain that it is considered an eligible STOTT PILATES workshop and to find out exactly how many CECs will be awarded for completing it.
Q. How do I accrue credits by attending STOTT PILATES workshops?
A. When taking a workshop at the STOTT PILATES International Certification Center or a Licensed Training Center, your credits are issued automatically upon completion. You will receive a completion letter from STOTT PILATES stating the proper CECs for that workshop.
For STOTT PILATES workshops or presentations at trade shows, you are responsible for sending the documentation to the International Certification Center in Toronto.
You must send the following:
* CEC submission form
* Tradeshow receipt
* Workshop completion letter to prove your attendance at a qualified tradeshow or convention
Q. How do I make a submission for my CECs?
A. You are required to keep track of all your Continuing Education Credits (workshops, videos, petitions, private evaluations, etc.) and retain all relevant documents. These, along with a CEC submission form, must be received by the STOTT PILATES International Certification Center by December 15 of each year to receive credit for that calendar year.
Q. Does the course or workshop have to be a STOTT PILATES workshop?
A. With the exception of successfully petitioned exercise science or anatomy-based workshops/courses (a maximum of 0.2 credits may be awarded in those cases), all CECs must be fulfilled by attending STOTT PILATES workshops. This ensures that you build on your original STOTT PILATES training and remain up-to-date with the latest information and methodologies.
Q. How do I submit an anatomy or exercise science (non-STOTT PILATES) workshop or course to be approved for STOTT PILATES CECs?
A. If an anatomy or exercise science course or workshop you have attended has not been previously approved for STOTT PILATES CECs, you may petition for CEC approval. Simply send the following information to STOTT PILATES for consideration:
* Administration fee ($10 U.S. or $13 Canadian)
* Course description/outline
* List of course objectives
* Instructor biography
* Proof of attendance
A petition application is available online at the top of the page. Petitions will not be reviewed if all of the above information is not included in the submission.
Q. How will I know if my non-STOTT PILATES workshop is approved?
A. STOTT PILATES cannot guarantee that CECs will be issued for courses or workshops not pre-approved. Please allow four to six weeks for STOTT PILATES® to review your petition. You will receive confirmation by mail or email. If you do not receive confirmation, please contact STOTT PILATES at 800-910-0001.
Q. Where can I find out about upcoming STOTT PILATES workshops?
A. Pacific NW Pilates provides schedules and information about all the workshops it offers on this Web site. NOTE: not every workshop offered by Pacific NW Pilates is automatically eligible for STOTT PILATES CECs. Please visit the following pages for more information:

Q. Does auditing a course count toward CECs?
A. One of the benefits you gain from taking courses at Pacific NW Pilates is the option to audit courses for at no additional charge. Auditing a course will not count toward CECs, but it is a great way to refresh your memory.
How it works:
After successful completion of any STOTT PILATES course or hosting through Pacific NW Pilates, you may audit the same course for free. This offer is only available within three years of the completion of the original course. Advance notice and approval are required. Please contact Pacific NW Pilates for information and availability if you would like to audit a course. Workshops may not be audited.
If you have taken a STOTT PILATES course(s) through another facility other than Pacific NW Pilates or you wish to acquire CECs for auditing a course, you may do so at our studio for 50% of the course tuition fee*. There is an exception: even if you have studied elsewhere, you may audit a previously attended course for free once you have signed up and paid for a future course at Pacific NW Pilates.
*Please note: Functional Anatomy and Injuries and Special Populations may only be audited by students who originally took those courses at Pacific NW Pilates.
