Injury/Special Populations

The STOTT PILATES® Injuries and Special Populations course equips instructors with the skills required to address a broad range of physical challenges.

Injuries and Special Populations is taught primarily by Melanie Byford-Young, STOTT PILATES Rehab Master Instructor Trainer and co-founder of Pacific NW Pilates.

Injuries and Special Populations (ISP)

This course will prepare instructors to customize workouts in order to address weaknesses, health conditions, postural problems or injuries (but not to diagnose specific injuries).

Topics covered in this lecture/demonstration class include:

  • Approaches to rehabilitating an injured musculoskeletal system
  • Anatomy and biomechanics, dysfunctions and pathologies, and exercise modifications in the following regions: lumbo-pelvic, cervical, upper quadrant, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle and foot
  • Discussion of pregnancy, fibromyalgia and many other special conditions, plus workout designs for different conditions
  • Appropriate modification of Matwork, Reformer, Cadillac, Stability Chair and Barrel exercises

Prerequisites:

Level One Matwork- IMP

Duration:

24 hours of instruction over four days

Continuing Education Credits:
2.4 STOTT PILATES credits

Required Course Materials:

Includes “ISP ResourceManual, ISP Support Guide, two back-care DVDs (“Be Kind To Your Spine” and “Standing Tall”), and two rehab DVD’s (“Spinal, Pelvic and Scapular Stabilization with Reformer and Vertical Frame,” Peripheral Joint Rehabilitation with Reformer and Vertical Frame”).

Optional Items: “Pain Free Posture” DVD, “Spinal, Pelvic and Scapular Stabilization on Equipment,” and “Peripheral Joint Rehabilitation on Equipment”.
